Dublin Theatre Festival

The Dublin Theatre Festival is of the oldest of its kind in Europe and has been running since 1957! Ireland has a strong tradition of theatre with many famous playwrights currently at work as well as those literary giants from our past, such as Brien Friel, Sebastian Barry, John Millington Synge, George Bernard Shaw and Oscar Wilde.

During 2011 there were over 500 performances in 25 venues throughout Dublin City and the programme for 2012 looks to be just as exciting. The Festival runs from the 27th of September to the 14th of October.

Included in the programme are some well-known pieces including, The Picture of Dorian Gray – in the Abbey Theatre with a new staging directed and adapted by Neil Bartlett. Also featured is Hamlet – with the Wooster Group – one of the most innovative theatre companies operating today – the production is based on the 1964 film version with Richard Burton.

Another exciting production is James Joyce’s Dubliners – which is based on a series of short stories portraying Dublin City. Although the book was first published almost a hundred years ago, this will be the first production of Dubliners on stage by The Corn Exchange – an award winning Irish ensemble company. It is set to be a dramatic and provocative working of the piece, bringing it to life for a modern Dublin.
